What Does a CRO Agency Actually Do?

Most CRO is a deck of opinions. A real conversion rate optimization agency runs tests, reaches significance, and grows revenue you can measure. Here is how to spot one.

What Does a CRO Agency Actually Do?

A conversion rate optimization (CRO) agency exists to do one thing: increase the percentage of your visitors who take the action you care about, usually a purchase. Everything else is in service of that number.

But "CRO agency" has become a loose label. Some sell a single audit and a PDF. Others run a disciplined, ongoing testing program. The difference matters, because only one of them reliably grows revenue.

The core job: turn existing traffic into more revenue

You have already paid for your traffic, through ads, SEO, email or word of mouth. CRO is about getting more out of that traffic instead of buying more of it. A two-point lift in conversion rate on the same traffic drops almost straight to your bottom line.

A good CRO agency works the whole funnel: landing pages, product pages, cart, and checkout. It looks for the places where intent is high but something gets in the way, then removes the friction and proves the change worked.

What a real CRO program includes

  • Research. Heuristic analysis, analytics review (GA4), session replay and heatmaps to find where users hesitate or drop off.
  • Hypotheses. Each idea is framed as a testable hypothesis: "If we do X, then metric Y will improve, because Z."
  • Prioritization. Ideas are scored by expected impact, confidence and effort so the highest-leverage tests run first.
  • A/B testing. Controlled experiments split traffic between the current version and a variant, measured to statistical significance.
  • Reporting and rollout. A plain report says whether the test won, lost, or was inconclusive. Winners ship; losers teach.

How to spot a weak CRO offer

Be cautious if an agency promises a fixed list of "best practices" with no testing, guarantees a specific percentage lift before seeing your data, or calls a winner after a few days without reaching significance. CRO is evidence, not opinion. If there is no control group and no significance threshold, it is not really CRO.

How long it takes

CRO is a compounding program, not a one-off. With enough traffic, a first test can reach significance in two to four weeks. The bigger gains come later, as winning tests stack and you learn what your specific audience responds to.

How much traffic you need

As a rough floor, a few hundred conversions a month lets most tests reach significance in a reasonable window. With less, the smart move is qualitative research and higher-impact redesign work first, then structured testing once volume supports it.

The bottom line

A CRO agency should make you more money from the traffic you already have, and it should be able to prove it with real experiments.
